Robert LEE
Rank: Private
Number: M/281538
Unit: ARMY SERVICE CORPS
Date of Death: 5 December 1918
Age: 33
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

Robert was born in the Harpurhey area of Manchester, the son of Robert and Ellen. In 1907, he married Martha Sherratt at St Augustine's Church, Brinksway, Stockport and the couple are believed to have lived at 121 King Street West.

The prefix "M" in Robert's service number indicates he served with one of the Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport Companies. These units moved stores and ammunition to front line areas, but their numbers were always much smaller than the equivalent Companies still using horse transport. Records at the National Archives confirm that Robert had an entitlement to wartime medals (not for gallantry) and this must mean he saw active service overseas.

Robert's ASC Company is not identified by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and this, coupled with his burial at home, suggests he had probably been discharged from the army, due to injury or sickness, some considerable time before. The fact that his grave is maintained by the Commission confirms that his death must have been directly related to his war service.
