Bertram had been born in Pendleton, Salford but his parents, Arthur and Alice , later moved to live at 46 Wellington Grove, Stockport. He enlisted in the town, during the early part of 1916.

His officer later wrote to the family offering condolences saying “Your son was killed practically instantaneously by a shot in the bottom of the spine. As a matter of fact, I was myself kneeling beside him at the time he fell across me.”

Bertram has no known grave and is commemorated on the nearby Memorial to the Missing.
