Michael LITTLE
Rank: Private
Number: 10436
Unit: 10th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 18 February 1917
Age: 40
Cemetery: Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France

Michael was the son of Sarah Ann Little and had been born with the parish of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Stockport. The family history website, FreeBMD, suggests that he was born between April and June 1877. It is has not possible to find his entry on the 1901 Census. There are several possible reasons for this, including that he may well have been serving with the army abroad, as did many young men of the time.

He later married Elizabeth Ann and they lived at 13 Kingston Street with their 5 children. He worked for Mr H Bardsley, who was a contractor, but it is not known in what capacity.

Michael enlisted at Stockport and his service number suggests that this will have been in August 1914. The local newspaper reported that he he had been seriously wounded on the 16th or 17th of February. The Battalion was in action on the 17th and this is the more likely date. Click here for details. He will hve been evacuated from the trenches and received first aid treatment from the battalion Medical Officer. He would then have been further evacuated to the Casualty Clearing Station, some miles away, at Bailleul where military surgeons would have done all they could to save his life.
