William LOFTUS
Rank: Private
Number: 13015
Unit: 10th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 26 April 1916
Cemetery: Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France

Nothing is known for certain about William Loftus' life except that Regimental records indicate he had been born in the parish of St Thomas' C of E Church, Stockport and enlisted in the town. His service number confirms he was an early volunteer, joining up in September 1914.

The 1901 Census lists two boys, one aged 7 and the other 17, who had been born in Stockport. Private Loftus is, almost certainly, one of them but it is impossible to know which.

He was killed during a tour of duty in the trenches described here. William's body was never found and identified and he is commemorated on the nearby Memorial to the Missing.
