Thomas was born in Stockport. His mother Mrs Mary Jane Lomas lived in the Lancashire Hill area of the town. He enlisted in November 1917 and, after training, was drafted to the 1st Cheshires. He will have gone on active service only a few weeks before he was killed in the battle described here.
