Nothing is known for certain about Sydney, other than he had been born within the parish of St Paul’s C of E Church, Great Portwood Street, Stockport and that he enlisted into the army in the town. The 1901 Census lists two boys, named Sydney Barnes, who had been born in Stockport. One would have been aged 21 in 1917, the other 26, but it cannot be established which is this soldier.

Sydney’s service number suggests he was a fairly recent recruit to the Battalion. 6-digit service numbers replaced 4-digit ones early in 1917 and there is no record of him having an earlier number. He was possibly a conscript rather than a volunteer. 31 July was the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres. The battalion’s attack is described here.
