Nothing is known of John's early life except that he had been born in the Stockport area. He is thought to have lived in the town all his life and, in 1916, his home was 19 All Saints' Road, Heaton Norris. In May of that year, he left his job at the Great Central Railway in Manchester and went to the local recruiting office to join up. John was posted to the East Divisional Signal Company, a Territorial unit, and was given the service number of T2046.

He spent a year with that Company in Egypt but was transferred to the 74th Company when it was formed in March 1917. He spent the remainder of 1917 in the Middle East and will have been near the action in Palestine. The 74th Division transferred to the Western Front in May 1918.

John was reported to have been wounded in the left arm and shoulder on or about 9 September although the circumstances are not known. He had been evacuated to a military hospital at Roeun and had been recovering well. However, he contracted pneumonia and died.
