Septimus Horridge LUDLOW
Rank: Private
Number: 27345
Date of Death: 11 May 1916
Age: 36
Cemetery: Willow Grove Cemetery, Stockport

The name of S Ludlow is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those who served with the Cheshire Regiment. It is not possible to be absolutely certain of the man’s identity but he is believed to be the ex-soldier whose details are recorded above.

Septimus was born in Reddish on 30 July 1879, the son of William and Maria. She died just ten days after his birth. The family had a brick-making business and he is thought to have worked as a labourer there. In 1902 , he married Lily Grimshaw at St Elizabeth’s Church and they would have several children together, of whom at least two died in infancy. They lived at 7 Back Piccadilly and Septimus would die at home.

He enlisted into the army on 17 July 915 and his service papers record that he was fit for home service only. He was discharged form the army as not being even fit enough for this on 29 March 1916.

Septimus died of natural causes unconnected with his military service and, as such, is not commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
