Number: M2/194783
Date of Death: 9 March 1919
Age: 34
Cemetery: Christ Church, Woodford

Nothing is known for certain of Arthur Maddocks life except that recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which notes his widow as being Mrs M A Maddocks, The Hand Cottage, Woodford. However, research by others suggests he may have been the Thomas Arthur Maddocks whose birth was registered in the Prestwich area in 1885. He may also be the Thomas Arthur Maddocks who, in 1910, married Mary Annie Broome at Cannock, Staffordshire.

The "M2" prefix in his service number indicates that he served with one of the Mechanical Transport Companies of the Army Service Corps that was attached to the British 2nd Army. The National Archives appears to hold no record of any entitlement to medals for Arthur and this suggests that, in fact, he never served overseas. The fact that his grave is maintained by the War Graves Commission confirms that his death, from illness or injury, must have been directly related to his military service.
