Martin was born in Stockport, the son of John and Margaret. However, for many years, he had lived with his aunt, Mrs Annie Maloney, at 83 Ridgefield Street. He worked at No. 2 Mill of the Stockport Ring Spinning Company on Brinksway, until he enlisted into the army in September 1915.

He died at a military hospital on the Channel coast from wounds he'd received in action. It cannot be known for certain when he was injured as the Battalion was heavily engaged in the fighting around Arras throughout the month.
