Isaac Marsden and Kate Foster married in the South Manchester area in 1890 and Cyril was born a couple of years later when the family were living in Longsight. Isaac died in 1900 and, in 1908, Kate remarried. Cyril's new stepfather was Morton Martin Jones and they lived at Faversham House, 82 Swann Lane, Cheadle Hulme.  

Cyril's service number indicates he was one of the many local young men who joined up within days of War being declared in August 1914. Click here for an account of the Battalion's early months of service and here for details of the attack in which he was killed.

600 soldiers are buried at Pink Farm Cemetery. 250 are unidentified but Cyril is believed to be one of them and there is a special memorial in the Cemetery to him and 218 others recording this
