Frank Norton MATTHEWS
Rank: Private
Number: 15267
Unit: 15th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 27 March 1918
Age: 30
Cemetery: Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France

Between January and March 1885, Arthur Henry Matthews married Eliza Preston at St Paul's Church, Portwood, Stockport. In early 1888, their son Frank was born. Frank is listed on the 1901 Census, aged 13 and working as a bobbin carrier in a cotton mill. There are no listings for either Arthur or Eliza living locally and it is possible that both had died by this time.

By the time he enlisted, in September 1914, he had married Agnes Maud but it is not known when. Frank was an original member of the 15th Battalion which was formed of men previously rejected by the army because they were below the regulation minimum height of 5' 2". They quickly became known as "Bantams" because of their small stature but determination to fight. After training, Frank will have gone overseas in February 1916.

He was killed during a massive German attack described here.
