Robert MCDONALD
Rank: Private
Number: 5771
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 22 October 1914
Age: 35
Cemetery: Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France

Information from the family history website, FreeBMD, suggests Robert was born between October and December 1878, in the Stockport area. Between July and September 1908, he married Catherine Fallon and they lived at 1 Mount Street, Stockport, with their three children.

To have been fighting so early in the war, Robert must have been a regular soldier or an ex-regular who had been recalled to the colours, as a reservist, when war was declared in August 1914. An account of the fighting in which Robert was killed is here. Robert was originally posting as missing and it would not be until August 1915 that his wife received confirmation from the military authorities that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified and he is commemorated on one the Memorials to the Missing.
