Joseph McGarry had been born in the parish of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Stockport. The family history website, FreeBMD, notes that a birth of a child of that name was registered at Stockport between January and March 1875. This is probably him

Joseph was possibly a regular soldier but was more likely to have been an ex-regular who was recalled to the colours as a reservist, when war was declared in August 1914. He was married and lived with his wife and three children at 2 Carlyle Street, Stockport.

Click here for details of the day he died. Joseph was originally posted as "missing" and it was not until August 1915 that Mrs McGarry received official notification that he was presumed to have been killed. Joseph's body was never found and identified.
