Ernest MCMILLAN
Rank: Corporal
Number: 50338
Unit: 1/4th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 14 October 1918
Age: 35
Cemetery: Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Dadizele, Belgium

Ernest was the son of David and Mary Ann McMillan, 29 Priestnall Road, Heaton Mersey. He had been born in Manchester and, at the time of the 1901 Census, the family was living in the City's Moss Side district. David McMillan was then aged 57, had been born in Scotland and was working as a carpenter/joiner. Ernest was following a similar trade and was probably working with his father. There is no mention of Mary Ann and it is possible she may have died by that time. A woman, aged 23, Minnie McMillan, a dress cutter, was probably Ernest's older sister.

Ernest's service number indicates that he had previously been in one of the Regiment's "service battalions". He had enlisted in Chester. Three of these battalions had been disbanded early in 1918 and the troops reallocated. Ernest was killed in an attack described in this link.
