William had been born in Kennington, London and, sometime later, his mother, Sarah, moved to 42 Brook Street, Hazel Grove marrying a Mr Hatton. The 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, was a regular army battalion and for William to have been fighting so soon after the outbreak of war, he must have been a regular or ex-regular who had been recalled to the colours as a reservist. Details of the fighting on 13 October are here. Further information about William is in the book “Hazel Grove to Armageddon” by John Eaton.
