Ernest MEEK
Rank: Private
Number: 127877
Unit: 75th Battalion MACHINE GUN CORPS
Date of Death: 17 January 1919
Age: 23 approx. (based on 1901 Census)
Cemetery: Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine

Very little is known about Ernest. He had been born locally and, when the 1901 Census, was aged 5. He was then living with his parents, Henry and Margaret, and his four siblings. The seven of them lived in four rooms at 3 Clark Street, in the Lancashire Hill area of town.

The 75th Division of the British army started to be formed in Egypt in the spring of 1917 but was not fully for operations until August 1918. Ernest's death, nearly two months after the end of the War and near to where a hospital was based, suggests he died from natural causes or from wounds he had received in the fighting.
