Rank: Lance Corporal
Number: 266666
Unit: 9th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 27 March 1918 (see below
Cemetery: Arras Memorial, France

Nothing has been discovered about Harry's pre-war life, other than regimental records note he was born in Stockport and enlisted in the town. His above service and his original one, 4336, give some clues to his military service. The original number is consistent with him joining the local Territorial battalion - the 6th Cheshires - probably in late 1915 or early 1916. The above six-digit number was allocated to Territorials from Januarys 1917, so it can be assumed that he did not transfer to the 9th Battalion until after that date.

He was killed during fighting described here. Military authorities have recorded his death on the date above. However, the Battalion was in a reserve area by that time and it is thought that, in the chaos of the battle , a simple error has occurred. It is more likely that Harry was killed on the 24th or 25th.
