Rank: Acting Lance Corporal
Number: P/21
Unit: Military Mounted Police
Date of Death: 6 March 1919
Cemetery: St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France

Nothing is known of John’s life, except that military records published after the War show he had been born in Glasgow and was living in Stockport at the time he enlisted into the army in the town.

All soldiers who served abroad before the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918 were entitled to medals recognising this. An index of men awarded these medals is available on the National Archives website but John does not appear to be amongst them. It would seem, therefore, that p[perhaps he had been in the Military Police but serving in the UK and only went abroad after the fighting had finished. Many members of the Military Police had served as civilian police officers and it may that John had continued in that capacity,. He died, of natural causes, whilst in a military hospital.
