Edward MERCER
Rank: Private
Number: 351541
Unit: 2nd Battalion MANCHESTER REGIMENT
Date of Death: 25 April 1918
Age:
Cemetery: Quesnoy Farm Military Cemetery, Bucquoy, Pas de Calais, France

It has not been possible to positively identify the Edward Mercer, on the Cheadle Memorial, as this soldier. He is, however, the only Edward Mercer listed in official records who appears to have any Greater Manchester connection, having lived at Droylsden and enlisted at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Edward was killed by artillery fire. The Battalion's War Diary notes that the enemy artillery was very active throughout the day, with the Battalion HQ being shelled at intervals. Although a number of soldiers were injured, Edward was the only one killed.
