Unit: CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death:

It has proved impossible to identify this man commemorated on the Stockport War Memorial, as serving with the Cheshire Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 19 men named J H Millers. None served with the Cheshires or appear to have any local connection. There are over 300 J Millers and over 100 H Millers. Several were Cheshires, but none appears local (except as otherwise identified for this project).

It is possible that he was Private John Henry Miller (service number 45509). He lived at 154 Hall Street, Stockport and enlisted into the army, aged 33, at the beginning of December 1915. He served abroad with the 10th and 11th Battalions of the Cheshire Regiment until he was discharged on 25 September 1918 as being no longer physically fit enough for active service. It has not been possible to find any record that this man died between 1918 and the unveiling of the War Memorial in 1925.
