Rank: Private

Unit: C Company, 12th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 18 September 1918

John was born within the parish of St Matthew's C of E Church, Stockport. His parents, Patrick and Elizabeth, lived at 39 Wood Street in the King Street West area of the town.

The 1901 Census shows that he was already working, aged 12, as a "throstle doffer" in a cotton mill. The Throstle machine spun the fibres onto bobbins and the "doffer" was the young lad who would remove the full bobbins.

He enlisted into the army at Stockport, during September 1914 and was killed in the fighting described here.
