Samuel had been born in Stockport, the son of James and Mary Ann. In later life, he married Ethel and they lived at 7 Harper Street, Edgeley.

His service number confirms he volunteered for the army in November or December 1914. He is believed to have been seriously wounded in an attack the day before he died, described here. He would have been evacuated from the front line and taken to a Casualty Clearing Station some miles behind the lines where military surgeons would have tried to save his life.
