William MYCOCK
Rank: Corporal
Number: 239476
Unit: Railway Operating Division ROYAL ENGINEERS
Date of Death: 13 December 1917
Age: 36
Cemetery: Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium

William is understood to have been single man who lived all his life in Stockport. He was the youngest child of Samuel and Sarah Mycock and, at the time of the 1901 Census, was living at the family home in the Old Road area of town. He had two brothers, Joseph and George and two sisters, Annie and Emma.

Like his eldest brother, Joseph, William worked as a clerk for one of the railway companies and it is, perhaps, no surprise that as an older, less fit man, he probably carried on this work as a soldier.

Railways were a key method of moving men and stores near to the front and there both standard and narrow gauge systems operating. William died of natural causes whilst at a field hospital near the town of Poperinghe.
