Thomas Arthur NEEDHAM
Rank: Guardsman
Number: 25042
Unit: 5th Reserve Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS
Date of Death: 11 April 1916
Age: 19
Cemetery: St John the Baptist Churchyard, Winster, Derbyshire

Thomas is believed to have died form natural causes whilst still in training at the Guards Depot and never served abroad on active service. Officially, he was still attached to the reserve Battalion, but is noted by the war Graves Commission as being assigned to the 1st Battalion. This suggests that his training was probably all but finished and he would have shortly gone overseas.

He had been born in Darley Dale, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann. At the time of the 1901 Census, he was the youngest of their three children and appears to have older twin sisters - Kate and laura, both aged 11.

By 1914, the family was living in Stockport and Sarah was the publican at the Old Admiral Hotel, 34 Middle Hillgate (after the War, Mr & Mrs Needham had moved to "Kilrea", The Dimple, Matlock)
