The name of this man is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial as serving with a Lancashire Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records the names of 80 men called Nicholson and having the initials A or C.

One of them, Private C A Nicholson, served with the Lancashire Fusiliers and, at first, appears to be the most likely person. However, this19 year old man was born and lived in Liverpool and his parents also lived in the City. It is of course, possible, that his name is commemorated locally because he had family members in Stockport.

Alternatively, the man on the Memorial may be a soldier who was discharged from the army, due to wounds or illness and died sometime later. This would explain his lack of commemoration by the Commission and it would have been entirely appropriate for his family to arrange for his name to be inscribed on the Memorial.

Unless further information comes to light, it is probable that he may now never be identified.
