Rank: Private
Date of Death:

The above brief information us taken from the inscriptions on the South Reddish and Stockport War Memorials. He is believed to be William Henry Nurse who, when the 1901 census was taken, was living at the home of his uncle and aunt at 6 Hill Street Reddish. They were James and Lillie Ashworth. William Nurse had been born in Bradford, Yorkshire in the late spring of 1896.

All soldiers who served abroad during the War were entitled to campaign medals and summary information about them is available on-line at the website of the National Archives. There is no trace of William amongst the records, nor does his death overseas appear to be recorded.

It seems reasonable to conclude, therefore, that he never saw action during the War. It has not been possible to trace a record of his death in England or Wales so, again, it seems probable that his service was in Scotland or Ireland (then, of course, still part of the UK).
