C O’Donell (O’Donnell)
Date of Death:

The name of C O’Donell is inscribed on the South Reddish War Memorial indicating that he served with the Royal Field Artillery. An examination of the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for men called O’Donell or O’Donnell has failed to identify anyone with an obvious local connection.

Local records of births marriages and deaths have also been examined (through the family history website, CheshireBMD). These indicate the Stockport births of a Cornelius O’Donnell in 1889 and a Christopher O’Donnell in 1894. The former is almost certainly the man who died of wounds on 30 July 1915 whilst serving with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He had been born in Stockport and lived in the area, although he enlisted at Rochdale. It seems very possible that this is the man recorded on the Reddish Memorial and that the reference to the Artillery is wrong.
