Henry was not a native of Stockport, having been born in Carlisle. However, by the time of the 1901 Census, he was living in the town and was working a felt hatter.

Later, he married Mary Jane and they lived at 7 Brook Street. He enlisted at Stockport and his service number suggests that this was probably during 1916 when he would have been conscripted.
