John William OWEN
Rank: Private
Number: 40852
Unit: 1/4th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 14 October 1918
Age: 33
Cemetery: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium

Information from the family history website, FreeBMD, suggests that John's birth was registered at Stockport between April and June 1885. He is probably the 15year old John Owen listed on the 1901 Census as living in Stockport and working as "cotton spinner bobbiner".

John originally served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. His service number was 71091. This is a late number suggesting that he was conscripted sometime after mid-1916. A number of battalions were disbanded in early 1918 and this is probably when John was transferred to one of the Cheshire's Territorial Army battalions.

He was killed in fighting described here. John's body was never recovered and identified and he is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Tyne Cot.
