Rank: Private
Number: 5171
Unit: 5th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment
Date of Death: 16 July 1917
Age: 27
Cemetery: Christ Church, Woodford

Samuel was born locally and, in 1901, was living at the family home in Birch Lane, Woodford, aged 10. His father, James then 37, was a silk weaver. His mother was Mary. They had six other children - Annie (16), John (14), Frank (8), Sydney (6), Mary (4) and Ellis (1).

In 1912, he married Charlotte Alice Newton who, in the early 1920s, was living at Victoria Cottage, Woodford.

Samuel's service number is not an early one for the Battalion and probably he indicates he enlisted in late 1916. A search of on-line records at the National Archives has not traced any entitlement to service medals. These pieces of information, and his local burial, suggest that he never served abroad on active service and probably died as a result of an accident or illness whilst still in training.
