Norman PINKERTON
Rank: Private
Number: 32609
Unit: 1st Garrison Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment
Date of Death: 21 July 1918
Age: 27
Cemetery: Buried at Lebong Catonment Cemetery. Commemorated on the Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial, Chennai, India

Norman was born in the Blackley district of Manchester and spent his early years at the family home of 30 King Street. His father, George, was a commercial traveller dealing in cloth goods and was married to Edith. They were still living in Blackley in 1901, when the Census was taken and it's not known when they moved to live at "Newholme" in Woodford. Nothing else is known about Norman's life before he joined the army. The Census recorded he had three siblings - George (then 11), Edith (5) and Evelyn (11 months).

Garrison Battalions were formed during the War, normally comprised of men deemed not fit enough for the rigours of trench warfare but still capable of providing useful service. Some Battalions would supply troops to guard rear areas, such as ports. Other battalions were sent to relieve regular army troops who were on duty throughout the Empire, allowing them to return to fight on the western Front.  The Lincolnshire's Battalion was formed in September 1915 and left for India the following month. It became part of the Presidency Brigade of the 8th (Indian) Division.

Lebong Cantonment, where Norman is buried, is near to the Indian town of Darjeeling. This may have been where the Battalion was stationed. Darjeeling was also an important convalescent centre and it is, perhaps, more likely that Norman suffered a relapse from whatever illness he was suffering from.

The Madras Memorial contains the names of over 1000 Great War servicemen who died in India and who are buried in cemeteries where it is not possible for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to maintain their graves in perpetuity.
