Harry is understood to have been born in the Reddish parish of Christ Church. He had served as a regular soldier, during the Boer War, but had left the army some time after 1909. He had married and was living with his wife and two children at Rhyl Street, Heaton Norris.

Harry had been working as window cleaner but was recalled to the Army as a Reservist when war was declared. An account of the day he was killed is here.

Harry's only brother, Frank, served with the 1/6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment and is believed to have survived the war.
