Rank: Private
Number: 266505
Unit: 2nd Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 8 September 1918
Age: 32
Cemetery: Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Thessalonika, Greece

Walter was born in Hazel Grove and lived there with his wife and their daughter at 215 London Road. He had married Catherine Oldham between October and December 1907. He worked at Christy's hatworks in Stockport where, the 1901 Census shows, he was employed as a "felt hat stumper".

He enlisted in the army in early 1915, but did not go overseas until 1 March 1918. The 2nd Battalion had been there for nearly two years. An examination of the records shows that most deaths were from natural causes (mainly malaria and influenza) rather than combat. Walter was no exception and he is reported to have died of "fever" whilst in a military hospital.

Further information about Walter is in the book "Hazel Grove to Armageddon" by John Eaton.
