George Arthur BENNETT
Rank: Private
Number: 15986
Unit: 10th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 25 May 1916
Age: 20 (based on 1901 Census information)
Cemetery: Aubingy Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France

George Bennett was born in the Market Drayton area and was still living there at the time of the 1901 Census. Regimental records indicate he enlisted at Macclesfield and his service number confirms this was in September 1914. Other than his commemoration on the Stockport War Memorial, it has not been possible to establish his connection with the area.

It is known that George was fatally wounded, probably during the attacks described here. He would have received on-the-spot treatment from the Battalion’s Medical Officer before being evacuated to Aubigny. At this time, military surgeons staffed 30th and 42nd Casualty Clearing Stations based at the village. They would have done all they could to save his life, but without success.
