John ROYLE
Rank: Private
Number: 88509
Unit: Depot King’s (Liverpool) Regiment
Date of Death: 11 April 1919
Age: 21
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

John H Royle, senior, worked as a stoker at a brewery and, in the June quarter of 1896, married Lizzie Eaton, at St Thomas' Church, Stockport. She died in 1900, aged 29, leaving John to bring up their two young sons. The following year, they were living at 80 Adscroft Street. The eldest boy, Sydney, was 4 and young John was 3.

The family history website, CheshireBMD, records that a John H Royle married in 1916 and this may have been John remarrying and then going to live at 42 Caroline Street, Edgeley (where it is known he was living in the early 1920s).

John's death after the end of the War and his attachment to the Regiment's Depot (rather than a fighting Battalion) suggests he may well have been wounded in the latter stages of the War and returned home for recovery. The National Archives holds an on-line medal entitlement record for John and this confirms he must have served overseas. Nothing further is known.
