Walter RUSHTON
Rank: Private
Number: 243683
Unit: 4th Reserve Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 10 March 1917
Age: 41
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

Walter had been born in Bacup, Derbyshire, the son of George Rushton, who later moved to live at 242 Heaton Lane, Stockport. During the winter of 1898/99, Walter had married Jane Parkinson and they lived just down the road from his father at 260 Heaton Lane.

The 1901 Census records that Walter was then working as an "under cooker" in a cotton mill. In his spare time he was connected with the Edgeley Prize Band.

Walter died whilst at Oswestry, presumably in training after being recently conscripted into the army. He was buried with full military honours. His coffin, draped with the Union Flag, was brought to the Cemetery in an open hearse and, after the service, the "Last Post" was played.
