The name W Sampson is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial, as a soldier who served with the Cheshire Regiment.
It has proved impossible to confirm, with any certainty, his identity. Three men of this name served overseas with the Regiment and one was killed. This is a Private William Sampson, 49560, who was killed in action, on 16 April 1918, whilst with the 10th Battalion. This man was born in Exeter and enlisted, not far away, in Wilmslow, but no next of kin is recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. As such, it is not known what connection, if any, he had with Stockport.
The only other information that has come to light is from the family history website, FreeBMD, which records that a William Sampson married, at Stockport, between October and December 1900. It is possible that these are not the same man.
