Thomas' parents, John and Sarah, lived at 33 Gorsey Bank Road, Stockport. John had been born in Cheadle and, according to the 1901 Census, was aged 39 and worked as a paperhanger. Sarah was aged 37. Thomas was also listed, aged 13, and working as a "thread knotter", presumably in a cotton mill.

In later life, he married Jane Ellen (known as Nellie) and they lived at 41 Bennett Street, Stockport. Thomas' service number confirms he was not an early volunteer and was probably conscripted sometime after early 1916.  He is buried at Etaples, which is well behind the front line and a centre for military hospitals. Thomas is recorded as having died of wounds but it is not possible to speculate how long he might have been in hospital.
