John William BENNISON
Rank: Private
Number: 148034
Unit: MACHINE GUN CORPS
Date of Death: 25 February 1920
Age: 29
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

Nothing is known of John Bennison's life except that, in 1912, he married Mary Burgess at St Paul's Church, Portwood. When the War Graves Commission collated its casualty information in the early 1920's, it wrongly recorded her name as May and noted she was living at 5 Burton Crescent, Edgeley.

John's medal entitlement records are available on-line at the National Archives' website. These show that he first served with the Manchester Regiment, service number 277261. This number was not issued until sometime after January 1917 and suggests that he may have served with the Regiment's 7th Battalion. At some later point, he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.

As the records of the War Graves Commission do not include a Corps unit, it is reasonable to speculate that John had been discharged from the army when he died. However, his inclusion in the Commission's Debt of Honour Register confirms his death was directly related to his War service and, therefore, he must have died from wounds from which he had failed to recover or from an illness contracted whilst serving.
