Nothing is known for certain about Thomas, other than he enlisted in the army at Stockport. His number suggests he was either a pre-war member of the Territorials or enlisted within days of war being declared in August 1914.

The 1910 Census lists two Thomas Shallcross who were born in Stockport and still lived there. One was aged 3, the other 10. It is possible that the younger person may have lied about their age to enlist, but the older one seems more likely to be the soldier. Whoever he was, he was killed in the attack described here.
