John died just before he was due to go overseas on active service. He had enlisted into the army on 3 March 1915 and had nearly compelted his training when he became ill. It's not known what was wriong, but it needed an operation at Stockport Infirmary. He had rejoined his unit but was taken ill again. This time he was taken to the Royal Infirmary at Hull, where he died.

He was the youngest of four brothers and lived with his parents at 2 Williamson Street, Reddish. Before he enlisted, John worked for Beyer, Peacock Ltd. The company manufactured railway locomotives at its factory in Gorton.
