Albert SHAW
Rank: Private
Number: 13300
Unit: 10th Battalion CHESHIRE Regiment
Date of Death: 9 October 1916
Age: 23
Cemetery: Grandcourt Road Cemetery, Grandcourt, Somme, France

Albert had been born in Mellor, the son of William (a gamekeeper) and Jane. The family later lived at 57 Ivy Cottage, Turncroft Lane, Stockport.

A keen footballer in his youth, Albert had played for Vernon Amateurs and Vernon Rovers. He worked at Bredbury Steelworks and had enlisted in September 1914.

Albert received minor wounds in May and July 1916 and was killed in the action described here.

He was originally posted as missing after the attack. It was not until May of 1917 that his family received confirmation that he had been killed. It is probable that his body had been buried by shell fire after the attack and was not discovered until months later.
