Rank: Air Mechanic, 2nd Class
Number: 67657
Unit: 15th Balloon Section ROYAL FLYING CORPS
Date of Death: 9 June 1918
Age: 42
Cemetery: Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, Pas de Calais, France

Almost nothing is known about Sam, other than the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records his parents as being “William and Ann Shaw of Stockport”.

The primary task of the Balloon Sections was to gain observation over the enemy lines. As such, they became targets for enemy aircraft but, as far as can be established, Sam’s death was unrelated to combat. The post-War publication “Airmen Died in the Great War” makes no mention that he was killed in action and his burial near to a known major hospital area perhaps suggests a death from natural causes.
