Joseph and his older brother, Wave, were born in Manchester but were living in Macclesfield at the time of the 1901 Census. Their parents were Joseph James Sigley, thenaged 33, a railway signalman and 31 year old Agnes Sigley. Their home was at 143 Bank Street.

By the time of the Great War, they had moved to 87 Station Road, Cheadle Hulme. Joseph's death at home and after the Armistice suggests that he may have been recovering from wounds received earlier or illness. Nothing further is known.
