Albert Edward SPICER
Rank: Private
Number: 352511
Unit: 2/9th Battalion MANCHESTER REGIMENT
Date of Death: 9 October 1917
Age: 20
Cemetery: Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium

Albert was born on 21 June 1897 in the Liverpool area. He was the son of a local taxidermist, Herbert Spicer, and his wife, Augusta Norah Spicer. The 1901 Census shows the family living in Fleet Street in the city and that Albert had two older siblings, Hilda (9) and Walter (7). In 1910, they moved to Stockport and took up residence at 54 Churchgate, where Herbert continued his trade.

Nothing else is known of Albert's early life. He enlisted into the army at Stockport, almost certainly as a conscript when he became 18. His service number suggests he was an original member of the 2/9th Battalion which went overseas on active service in March 1917. He was killed a few months later in this attack.
