The family history website, FreeBMD, suggests that Arthur's birth was registered at Stockport between January and March 1878. By the time of the 1901 Census, he was working in the town as a painter at a brewery.

FreeBMD also suggests that he married between July and September 1907 and that his wife was probably Ellen Oldfield. He enlisted at Stockport and his service number suggests he was not an early volunteer. He will have been conscripted towards the end of 1916. Arthur was killed during an important attack described here.

Arthur will have been buried very close to where he was killed. After the war, these very small burial areas were closed and the bodies re-interred in "concentration" cemeteries such as Hooge Crater.
