Tom was born in Todmorden. His father, also called Tom and mother, Annie, later came to live in Heaton Norris, at 21 Oxford Street.

His service number suggests he was a fairly recent conscript to the army and had enlisted at Stockport. He took part in the actions described here and was seriously wounded. He would have been evacuated from the battlefield after receiving first aid and taken to one of the Casualty Cklearing Stations, operating some miles away at Frevent. There, military surgeons would have tried, unsuccessfully, to save his life.
