Frederick's home for most of his life was at 102 Love Lane, Heaton Norris where he lived with his parents, Charles and Matilda and his brother George. Shortly before he died, the family moved to 13 Brinksway Road, Heaton Norris.

Frederick was a regular soldier and had been serving in India. The Battalion arrived back in England on 24 December and there would have only been time for a couple of days leave before it left again for France. Frederick as killed during the fighting described here.

George Stokes would die from "fever" whilst serving with the Cheshires in 1916.
