There is some confusion about which Battalion Ernest was serving with when he was killed in action. The regimental history records it as the 9th Battalion, whilst the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has it as the 10th Battalion. Both Battalions were in the forward areas on 4 July, so it is impossible to speculate which was Ernest's.

He had been born in Glossop and enlisted there in September 1914. His parents, James and Emily, were living still there at the time of the 1901 Census but, by the early 1920s, had moved to 270 Sheffield Road, Tinsley, Sheffield. The Census records James, then aged 38, as working as a cotton spinner and, Emily, aged 35, as a mill clerk.
